Publisher's Description of Gallery 1

" The open-source web-based (file base) software product that lets you manage your photos on your own website. "
- From Bharat Mediratta

Gallery 1 is a web based software product that lets you manage your photos on your own website.

You must have your own website with PHP support in order to install and use it.

With Gallery you can easily create and maintain albums of photos via an intuitive interface. Photo management includes automatic thumbnail creation, image resizing, rotation, ordering, captioning, searching and more.

Gallery was created in an effort to prevent well-meaning folks from sending us obscenely large photos by email. It was designed to provide an easy place for friends and relatives to create and maintain their own photo albums.

Basic Photo Album features:
* Easy to create Photo Albums
* Easy ways to add Photos, e.g. with Drag and Drop Tools
* Photo and Album Administration and Editing
* Auto-Generation of Thumbnails and Resized Images
* Handles Many Image Formats

Comprehensive Features:
* Easy Installation and Upgrades
* Multi-User Ready
* Themeable - Change the Look and Feel by Switching Themes.
* User / Permission Management
* Integrations available for many CMS, Forum and for other Software
* Internationalized - Over 20 Mostly Complete Translations
* Community Building Features (Comments, User Self-Registration, ...)
* Portable - Gallery 1 runs on any webserver with PHP 4 or PHP 5 and does not require anything else (no Database required!)
* Handles Video and other Media
* Unlimited Number of Sub-Album Levels

Comparison Between Gallery 1 and Gallery 2
Gallery 1 is the first generation web-based photo album organizer.

Gallery 2 is the future: It is already leading in downloads and bug/feature/support requests, and most of our users are either switching over to or starting out on Gallery 2. Active Gallery 1 development will end soon.

One of the main differences between Gallery 1 and 2 is how the "metadata" (comments, titles, descriptions, keywords, etc) are kept and maintained. Gallery 1 uses a file based approach whereas Gallery 2 uses a database approach (MySQL). Unlike Gallery 2, Gallery 1 does not need a database backend.

Which to choose?
If your gallery is going to be large, the obvious choice is G2. If your gallery is going to be small (and stay small) and/or running on very low end hardware, it is a tougher choice. G1 would probably run better for most people, but the flexibility and power of G2 will make most users happier.
