Publisher's Description of Linux-NTFS
" A Linux kernel driver for the NTFS file system allowing users to read and write to NTFS partitions thus using their Windows files under Linux. "
- From Linux-NTFS Project
The goals of the Linux-NTFS project are to develop reliable and full feature access to NTFS by the Linux kernel driver and by a user space driver (ntfsmount), and to provide a wide collection of NTFS utilities and a developer's library for other GPLed programs. We have already achieved a lot, with high quality results.
What is NTFS?
NTFS is a file system that was created by Microsoft to accompany Windows NT. It is a modern file system with all the features you may want, and some you don't (Microsoft does seem to have a lot of features that no one likes)
NTFS features
* Large file/volume sizes (up to 2^64 bytes).
* Built in compression.
* Built in encryption.
* Journalling. (Automatic recovery).
* Fine grained Access Control and Auditing support.
* Less slack space than FAT based file systems.
* Multiple Named Streams (a.k.a forks).
* Hard-Links.
* Reparse Points (Soft links, Junction points, Volume Mount Points, DFS, etc.).
* Quota support.
* Extended attributes (sort of like xattrs).
* Multiple file namespaces.
* Directories are stored in a balanced tree.
* Sparse files.
Versions of NTFS
Some people call the NTFS version as NTFS4 (for WinNT4) and NTFS5 (for Win2k and XP). This project use the version that is specified on the disk.
* NTFS 1.2 comes with WinNT4.
* NTFS 3.0 comes with Win2k.
* NTFS 3.1 comes with WinXP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista.
What is the NTFS Kernel Driver?
The NTFS Linux kernel driver is the piece of code that allows Linux software to access NTFS Volumes.
What is ntfsmount?
ntfsmount (part of the ntfsprogs) is an read/write userspace NTFS driver. It provides full read-write access to NTFS, excluding writing compressed and encrypted files, changing file ownership, access right. It is different from the kernel driver in the way that is resides in the user space. That means that it is a bit slower but has more features
What is libntfs?
libntfs is a library that reads and manipulates NTFS volumes. libntfs is developed in concurrence with ntfsprogs. It is also used by some other projects.
What are ntfsprogs?
ntfsprogs are a collection of utilities for doing stuff with NTFS volumes.
Download Notes:
* NTFS Tools and Library
The ntfsprogs package contains userspace tools: mkntfs, ntfscat, ntfsclone, ntfscluster, ntfscp, ntfsfix, ntfsinfo, ntfslabel, ntfsls, ntfsresize, ntfsundelete, etc and a shared NTFS library. This package does neighter require nor contain the NTFS kernel driver.
* LDM Tools
This package contains the kernel driver to read the LDM database. It also contains two tools, ldminfo and ldmutil. ldminfo prints information about the LDM database in several formats. ldmutil allows you to alter the contents of the LDM database.
* Documentation
